It did leave me wondering what was going on and, as you suggest, didn't really answer any questions.

Hence the sequels, I guess.

Oh well - I'll keep an eye out for the sequels.

Cheers

PMPlastic Mancunianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01864213919913476168noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4170913783015287649.post-90433975261746899022010-03-24T10:44:51.730+00:002010-03-24T10:44:51.730+00:00Looking forward to your review of "Cube."...Looking forward to your review of "Cube." That's quite a surprise really considering I love Sci-Fi.

However, I have seen Event Horizon and it is a fabulously scary movie. I watched it with Mrs PM and she was cowering all the way through it. I think it would definitely make her all time top 20.

Cheers

PMPlastic Mancunianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01864213919913476168noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4170913783015287649.post-74661466504297227202010-03-15T08:05:00.856+00:002010-03-15T08:05:00.856+00:00I'm not a huge Sci-Fi fan, but I do like stuff...I'm not a huge Sci-Fi fan, but I do like stuff such as Stargate, Farscape, Firefly. (I like a little comedy mixed in with my fear). I have seen several of the movies on your list and your reviews have prompted me to make my own short list of movies that I might possibly enjoy.
I have vague memories of a movie set in the future, not sure of the title, Population Zero?, where people were not allowed to have children, the earth was vastly overcrowded, at one point all babies born had a black light tattoo or microchip to prove they'd been born before the cutoff date. After that all "babies" were dolls programmed to act like the real thing and they were traded in for "older" children after a suitable time. If a woman did find herself pregnant she was supposed to take the abortion dose immediately. In this movie a couple managed to have a real baby, were found out and escaped the city to a beach somewhere.Riverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14794655013673748992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4170913783015287649.post-72223415529020503002010-03-15T08:00:41.480+00:002010-03-15T08:00:41.480+00:00Hi Pandora,

I preferred the TV series.

Yes I do like Donnie Darko and I suppose it is a sci-fi film really. Not sure it would make the top 20 though.

There are loads of other similar movies bubbling under - picking a top 20 is more difficult than it sounds - there are just so many to choose from.

Cheers

PMPlastic Mancunianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01864213919913476168noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4170913783015287649.post-49185756511954876002010-03-15T07:57:45.619+00:002010-03-15T07:57:45.619+00:00Nice list! I almost included "Alien: Resurrection" in the list because I think that is another outstanding movie and of course, she effectively is a "mother" in that one.

Yes - I have also seen the "Incredible Shrinking Man" (though not for many ,many years). I too hate spiders - though I don;t think that phobia stems from the film. A remake would be superb.

In fact, I do like a lot of movies from that era - "The Day The Earth Stood Still", "This Island Earth", "It Came From Outer Space" to name but a few. In fact, perhaps I should list my favourite "classic" Sci-fi films in a future post.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Cheers

PMPlastic Mancunianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01864213919913476168noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4170913783015287649.post-69108833819739646252010-03-14T18:29:30.802+00:002010-03-14T18:29:30.802+00:00By the way, have you ever seen "The Incredibl...By the way, have you ever seen "The Incredible Shrinking Man"? For its time, it was quite good. I wish they would re-make it with modern technology but I am sure they would ruin whatever good things there were.
As a child I saw it originally on TV and developed a fear of spiders, especially the big hairy ones. And about three years later, my family was driving along a country road at night and we happened to see a tarantula crawling along the side. My brother insisted on putting it in the first aid kit box and taking it back with us. In the car.. for 5 hours! Talk about a plot for a thriller. (But too much like snakes on a plane, maybe.) Anyway, he promptly went to school the next Monday and sold it for 5 bucks. I know, I know, they certainly overlap a great deal. Aliens is even better as a stand alone film- without seeing the first one. As a stand-alone, there is a lot more tension because Ripley's trauma is evident but until we actually see how absolutely horrible that creature is, you, like the crew, really can't take her that seriously.
This could be a complete misunderstanding of the film, but isn't Aliens- and the whole series to some extent- a metaphor about motherhood? Its seems to be a running theme. That demon-like thing erupting from your abdomen, the computer was called "Mother", the adopted little girl, and of course, the alien creature itself was a mommy on the nest.
Even after so long, the film holds up well.Nomadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03686282358562565742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4170913783015287649.post-44709523563530084662010-03-14T17:57:02.628+00:002010-03-14T17:57:02.628+00:00Hi MArk,
